应bat365在线官网登录燕京学堂中国专题系列讲座邀请,英国皇家工程院外籍院士、国际欧亚科学院院士、香港城市大学前校长、bat365在线官网登录名誉教授张信刚,将于2016年4月20日来到bat365在线官网登录讲学。

讲座摘要

张信刚教授将以人类历史的宏观角度,结合自身四十余年在中国及世界其它各地的游览经历,从人口构成、语言、文学传统、信仰体系、民族构成、社会习俗及科技成就等领域,多方面地讲述并分析中国形象。他将讲解中国的国民性格及文化的特性与特点,并就中国在世界中的独特性展开讨论。

主讲人介绍

张信刚教授为台湾大学土木工程学士(1962),美国斯坦福大学结构工程硕士(1964),美国西北大学生物医学博士(1969)。

张教授先后任教于美国布法罗纽约州立大学(1969-1976),加拿大麦吉尔大学(1976-1984)及美国洛杉矶南加州大学(1984-1990)。1990年出任香港科技大学工学院创院院长,1994年任美国匹兹堡大学工学院院长,1996年任香港城市大学校长及大学讲座教授,2007年退休。近年来他在bat365在线官网登录、清华大学、山东大学、上海交通大学、中欧国际商学院及土耳其海峡大学讲授人文通识课程;是bat365在线官网登录、清华大学、西安交通大学、东北大学及北京外国语大学的名誉教授。

张教授曾发表英文学术论文百余篇,研究专著两集,获得一项加拿大专利;并曾出版有关教育、文化与文明的中、英文著作十二部。他近年来的学术兴趣主要在欧亚大陆上各文明的发展与交往,特别是“丝绸之路”上的文化交流。 

张教授为英国皇家工程院外籍院士、国际欧亚科学院院士。于2000年获法国政府颁授的“法国国家荣誉军团骑士勋章”;2002年获中国香港特别行政区政府颁授的“金紫荆星章”;2009年获颁“法国国家学术棕榈司令勋章”。

张教授曾担任香港文化委员会主席(2000-2003)、香港创新科技顾问委员会委员(2000-2004)、香港司法官员推荐委员会委员(1999-2005)等公职。

The Yenching Academy of Peking University is hosting a China Studies Lecture Series. Professor Chang Hsin Kang, Foreign Member of Royal Academy of Engineering in the United Kingdom, Member of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Former President of City University of Hong Kong, Honorary Professor at Peking University, will give a public lecture on April 20th, 2016.

Theme: A Long and Hard Look at China

Abstract:

Based on a macroscopic view of human history and drawing upon his extensive travels in China and other parts of the world over the past four decades, Professor Chang gives a multifaceted portrait of China in terms of its population make-up, language, literary tradition, belief systems, esthetic values, social mores and technological achievements. He concludes by pinpointing some important features of the Chinese national character and ponders over the question "Is China exceptional".

Speaker

Professor Chang Hsin Kang received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Taiwan University (1962), M.S. in Structural Engineering from Stanford University (1964) and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University (1969). 

Having taught at State University of New York at Buffalo (1969-1976), McGill University (1976-1984) and the University of Southern California (1984-1990), he became Founding Dean of School of Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (1990-1994) and then Dean of School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh (1994-1996). Professor Chang served as President and University Professor of City University of Hong Kong from 1996 to 2007. 

In recent years, Professor Chang has taught general education courses at Peking University, Tsinghua University, China-Europe International Business School and Bogazici University in Istanbul. Besides being President-Emeritus of City University of Hong Kong, he is an Honorary Professor at Peking University, Tsinghua University and several other major universities in China.

Professor Chang has published over 100 research articles and two research treatises in biomedical engineering and holds one Canadian patent. In addition, he has authored 11 books in Chinese and 1 book in English, mainly on education, cultures and civilizations. His academic interests now focus on cultural exchanges across the Eurasian landmass, particularly along the Silk Road. 

Professor Chang is a Foreign Member of Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom and a Member of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences. He was named by the Government of France to be Chévalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur in 2000, decorated as Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 2009, and was awarded a Gold Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2002.

Professor Chang has served as Chairman of the Cultural and Heritage Commission of Hong Kong (2000-2003), a member of Hong Kong’s Council of Advisors on Innovation and Technology (2000-2004) and of Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission (1999-2005). 

He is currently an independent non-executive director of Hong Kong Telecom Trust, Hang Lung Properties, Brightoil Petroleum and Nanyang Commercial Bank.

This lecture is jointly hosted by Yenching Academy of Peking University and School of Foreign Languages of Peking University. It is free and open to all PKUers. Well welcome!
